Participants
There were 22 participants all from the Cycle of specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Faculty of Medicine of Yaounde I, attending the Postgraduate Research Training on Reproductive Health in Yaounde Faculty of Medicine (see List of participants).
Course layout
The programme was structured as a 2 week course on genetics and research methodology and a 4 week course on reproductive health. The long distance learning course could not be realised because of difficulty with internet connexion . Lectures planned to be given by teleconference were delivered by local lecturers.
Lectures
The Research Methodology course was structured around the following topics:
evidence based reproductive health practice, types of epidemiological study,
community interventions, methodological issues on the use of anthropometry
for evaluation of nutritional status and on the measures of maternal morbidity/mortality,
strategies for data analysis of different types of epidemiological study,
systematic review, critical appraisal of research reports, ethical aspects
in research, and economic and program evaluation. The Reproductive Health
course was structured in eight modules, including: basic pathophysiological
principles, genetics, family planning, infertility, gynaecological endocrinology,
genital infections/sexually transmitted infections, cancers, and obstetrics.

The 29 speakers were in the majority staff from Faculty of Medicine (17),
6 of these were from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The 12
others, specialists working in Yaounde, Douala or Maroua Provincial hospitals
were Obstetrician/Gynaecologists (9), Dermatologists (1), Pathologists (1),
Nuclear specialists (1): the majority of them were former participants of
the Geneva Reproductive Health course (see List
of speakers).
Attendance to lectures
It was very satisfactory. Each of the participants was present regularly for all the duration of the course.
Facilities
Throughout the course, all students had access to the computers in the Library of the Faculty of Medicine. Access to internet was not regular, but enabled them to conduct the literature search, bibliographic review and paper preparation. Basic training on the use of internet, Medline and PowerPoint was provided.
Exams
In order to obtain the certificates, participants had to fulfil two requirements:
- a bibliographic review on a topic of their interests, under the supervision of a tutor, including a 15 minutes’ oral presentation (15-16 July 2004).
- a multiple choice test (60 questions) (09 July 2004)
All the participants attended the exams (MCQ and Oral presentations).
Accommodation
Facilities as breakfast and lunch were offered to all the participants
for the duration of the courses..
A bus was rented for the transportation of all the participants for
the visits of the UN offices in Yaounde (WHO, UNFPA, World Bank, PNUD)
and the Centre Pasteur Pathology laboratory.
