The Oxford University Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute (OMPHI) in collaboration with the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER) has provided health professionals from Ethiopia with a two-day, free training on The evidence-based management of Postpartum Haemorrhage. The course was developed in an e-learning format and sponsored by the Maternal Health Task Force at the Harvard School of Public Health and the funding was provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Participants were from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Mekele University School of Health Sciences. Sixty health professionals took the course, comprising of 24 medical interns attached to the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 19 IESO (Integrated Emergency Surgical Officer) trainees undergoing a masters level training on emergency surgery including caesarean section and other obstetric emergency surgery, 14 residents at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department and 3 general practitioners who are faculty members at the department. Two sessions were held, morning session for 27 participants and afternoon session for 33 participants. After the completion of the course, each participant took the knowledge assessment test. At the end of the training, all successful participants were presented with a certificate by the Head of department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the morning session and the Dean of the school of health sciences for the afternoon session.
A similar training course on The Evidence-based Management of Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia was held in the country in December 2011- The Oxford Evidence-based Management of Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia Training Course in Gondar, Ethiopia and The Oxford Evidence-based Management of Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia Training Course in Mekelle, Ethiopia.
