Ed Hughes is a Professor Emeritus in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. He received medical training at Liverpool, Ottawa and Monash Universities and since joining the faculty at McMaster, Ed has completed a Master’s Degree in Health Research Methodology.

In addition to training as an REI specialist, Ed worked as a GP in a remote area of Northern British Columbia called Bella Bella. He has many interests outside medicine, including fine art (please refer to eghughes.ca) and cycling.

Ed’s research interests include the effectiveness of sub-fertility treatments, the effects of smoking, aging and environmental exposures on reproduction and the inhibin/TGFß peptide family. Some years ago, he led a multi-centre randomized controlled trial of expectant management versus IVF (EMVI) as part of his strategy to encourage public funding for IVF in Canada. More recently, he has completed research on Art Therapy as a healing tool for subfertile women.

Ed is an Associate Editor for Human Reproduction and a founding editor of The Cochrane Collaboration Sub-Fertility module. He is also a past-president of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society.
