Maternal Health Club Launch, Margibi, Liberia - Jutomue Doetein

Liberia has one of the world's highest rates of maternal mortality. One out of every ten women dies while pregnant, giving birth to their babies, or in the aftermath of delivery. When a mother dies, the likelihood of her baby dying increases (UNICEF Liberia).

To address the issue of maternal mortality and newborn deaths in Liberia, a few of my colleagues are currently implementing a maternal health project called “Help a mother and newborn in Liberia”. It focuses on addressing some of the challenges faced in reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Liberia. The different interventions of the project are being piloted in Margibi county.

I had the opportunity to provide some support to their project by speaking to more than 30 big bellies about Pregnancy, Antenatal care, Motherhood, and Breastfeeding.

We also launched a big belly club which will help them access information that will result in delivery at the clinic or hospital.
