Community-based education and counseling in reproductive health, Sari, Iran

During 2022, Dr Zeinab Hamzehgardeshi and Dr Zohreh Shahhosseini - as project leaders - and their team* started a community-based health education & counseling project on reproductive health. This project was designed for promoting of the family and adolescent health. This project aimed to involve of master students in midwifery counseling for family health promotion. The community based reproductive health team provided a holistic health promotion program in Sari city with collaboration of deputy of Social and Cultural Affairs’ Sari Municipality, Mazandaran, Sari.
Sari is a metropolis in North of Iran. Sari Municipality established several center for citizens of health education and promotion. Sexual and reproductive health research center, and department of reproductive health and midwifery, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences have designed and implemented the community based reproductive health in Citizen houses of Sari Municipality.
We have taught and consulted over 200 women in reproductive age about family health, adolescent health promotion, infertility prevention counseling, puberty experiences, and sexual transmitted disease prevention. In addition, we have consulted to senior citizens about healthy lifestyle and prevention of cardio vascular disease risk factors. We have used from art for exploring of girls experiences regard to puberty. At the end, we gave gifts to the girls and their mothers for explaining their first puberty experience.
After that, we designed a social network and continue our health communication. All of participants satisfied. Recently, we have made a needs assessment survey and have explored citizens’ health education needs. We hope that the collaboration between our department and Sari Municipality be lead to sexual and reproductive health promotion in our city.
