Training course in family planning 2018

Objectives of the course
The training and education of health care workers in developing countries on public health and programmatic approaches for family planning. The training will emphasize on the importance of informed reproductive choices, with the aim of improving the health of women and their families. The course would also include basic knowledge on counselling and informed decision making to highlight the importance of providing appropriate information and ensuring proper choices are made.
Family planning services are usually good entry points for women's health services, but these are also important components of other services such as antenatal and post-partum care, and even child care, even at the primary health care level in developing countries so as to reach all those in need with equity and efficiency.
The participants, after completion of the course would be expected to act as providers and possible trainers to further health care providers on family planning.
Learning objectives
- To define the basic principles of population demographics
- To list and define basic indicators related to population and family planning
- To list the basic steps on counseling in reproductive health, focusing on family planning counseling
- To identify the need and requirements for an informed decision making process on contraceptive choice
- To characterize the following contraceptive methods based on mechanism of action, indicators of effectiveness, side effects, non-contraceptive benefits, eligibility criteria and interventions for certain problems during use:
- Combined oral contraceptives
- Progestin only pills
- Injectable contraceptives
- Hormonal implants
- Tubal ligation and vasectomy
- IUD (copper bearing and levonorgestrel IUS)
- Fertility awareness methods
- Barrier methods
- Emergency contraception
- New contraceptive technology
- Lactational amenorrhea method
- To characterize the principles of reproductive rights and gender issues related to family planning
- To list and use the common guidance documents and tools in family planning, such as the MEC, SPR, DMT and Global Handbook, among others
- To identify sources of training tools and materials on family planning counseling and methods

Teaching-learning methods to be used in course
On each of the topic, the following items will be posted:
- A set of slides with accompanying talking points
- Reference documents
- Other audio-visual materials
What is required of you?
For each module, participants must:
- Study the slides and talking points.
- Read all accompanying documents.
- Answer to the multiple choice questions and complete the short assignment, after going through the slide set and documents.
A personal coach will be assigned to each participant, whose role is to facilitate the course and serve as tutor.
Course validation and certificate
In order to validate the course and obtain the certificate, participants are required to successfully answer to the multiple choice questions and complete an assignment that provides information on the overall situation of Family Planning in their countries in terms of prevalence, relevant health services data, current country strategies, care services and existing barriers and challenges.
The assignment should be based on a literature search and, if relevant, professional experiences of the course participant. We will provide specific guide and instructions for paperwork assignment.
