I am a newly graduated medical doctor from Aguascalientes, Mexico. I have always been interested in women’s health. In my university I founded the first Student Interest Group in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Mexico. Working alongside The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), we set up a series of lectures, clinical cases, and workshops that are given on a regular basis. As an example, we had the opportunity to host the GFMER Training Course in the management of Preeclampsia and Postpartum Hemorrhage last year.

I also directed the university’s medical brigades, getting students from all stages of medical school together with medical doctors to deliver primary care to remote communities in the State of Mexico. One of the things I’m most proud of was launching an annual program that offers early detection of gynecological cancer to underprivileged women.

I am currently doing my social service in a rural town in the outskirts of Mexico City. In a place where teenage and unwanted pregnancies seem to be ubiquitous, I am reminded daily of how much there is yet to do for women in my country. I have started going to schools in the area to deliver sexual and reproductive health lessons to young boys and girls.

Next year I am going to start my residency in Ob-Gyn where I plan to further my education in order to take better care of my patients and to continue working on reducing gender disparities in health issues.
