Prof. A. Jyothy received Ph.D in Genetics from Osmania University, Hyderabad in 1982. She has 30 years of teaching and research experience. She has joined the Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases, Osmania University, Hyderabad, India as Junior Cytologist in 1983 and as Assistant Professor in 1989. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996 and took charge as the Head, Dept of Cell Biology in 1997.
In 2005, Prof. Jyothy assumed the duties as Director. She was instrumental in introducing summer and winter training programs for post graduate students of medical and life sciences in the field of Applied Human Genetics. She has established genetic clinics in major hospitals of the city. Under her able guidance, “Special education centre for the mentally handicapped”, is catering to the needs of special children and their families. She has conducted several programs that serve and promote the health of the women and children especially in rural areas & slums.
Prof. Jyothy has been eminent in guiding research programs of M.Phil, Ph.D and Post doctoral students. She has guided more than 250 students from different colleges for their post graduate dissertation projects. She has published over 100 research papers in national and international journals of repute.
Prof. Jyothy as a renowned scientist has obtained research funding from national agencies such as DBT, DST, ICMR and UGC. Her research contribution is a credit to the field of human genetics that has made significant impact on public health. She is the reviewer for different National and International Journals namely Clinica Chimica Acta, International Heart Journal, International Journal of Human genetics and Indian Journal of Medical Research etc.
Her areas of research include:
- Cytogenetic, Biochemical and Molecular studies in Mental Retardation, High Risk Pregnancies and Birth Defects.
- Genetic, Biochemical and Molecular studies in Adult onset disorders- Cardio vascular disorders, Diabetes, Stroke, Osteoporosis and COPD.
- New Born Screening for Congenital Hypothyroidism and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.
- Inborn errors of metabolism with special reference to Aminoacidopathies.
- Genotoxicity studies in population exposed to Occupational & Environmental hazards.
Prof. Jyothy has received many awards for her excellent academic accomplishments. She has received HPS-IMH oration award, 2009-10 from Hyderabad Psychiatric Society and Women Achievers Award, 2011 from Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSDW).
Prof Jyothy has been invited to be a member of many prestigious health, research and community organizations.
